The Simple Things

Hollywood is illustrious for portraying romance as a huge gesture.

We've got Richard Gere running up building stairs to proclaim his love for Julia Roberts...
Found in my 2008 study notes from my Doush

We’ve got Tony Curtis stealing a giant yacht to impress his crush on Marilyn Monroe...
We've got Meg Ryan who travels across America to Seattle to meet Tom Hanks, a man she heard once on the radio...

While these are some of my favourite movies that I truly enjoy watching several times a year, it is my belief that these huge gestures of romance create an unapproachable and unrealistic idea of romance.

These ideas are beautiful and passionate and sure as hell can make me cry – but one mustn’t forget the small things. The little, simple things that keep a relationship feeling special and new all the time.

I love little notes written throughout my agenda

I love when the door is opened for me

I love phone calls that eventually put me to sleep at night

I love tickle fights

I love cute texts that make me smile

I love holding hands

I love skating together in the winter

I love lounging together in the summer

These small little things are what truly make my heart warm.

I’m not proposing that Hollywood should stop with the huge bold romances, but perhaps they could create a cute movie of the little things... although, unless one is actually in the swing of the little thing, it probably wouldn’t feel as special or adorable or absolutely lovely.

Procrastination

It's funny how students long for excuses to step away from their homework and will take any chance they can get to have some fun. Take this weekend for example:

I had made a rather detailed plan for this weekend to study for my midterms. Friday was for one class, Saturday for another and Sunday for another class, as well.

FRIDAY
After sleeping in and waking up around 11, I decided it was important for me to have a delicious brunch which included eggs and bacon with a side of toast. What could have been a quick tidy ended up becoming an interesting project for my mom and I. I began helping my mom clean and organize our kitchen, which may sound awful to some... but was actually right up my ally. When my boyfriend came home from practice we decided it was best to just go to the movies, as clearly this day wasn't meant for studying. We watched Couples Retreat (amazing) and then ended up driving around for the rest of the night.

SATURDAY
Again... I slept in and before I knew it it was time to head downtown to watch a football game! This also took up quite a bit of time and by the time I got home it was 5:00. "Ok Meltab... now you have the rest of the night to stay home and start your studying!" After feeling an intense grumble from my stomach however, I realized I had to satisfy my hunger needs. So... I headed to Swiss Chalet take-out. I came home and decided I'd watch just ONE episode of Full House while I ate my dinner (for company.) One episode turned into three... and that's when I decided to head upstairs to do some serious studying. I got onto my computer to collect my lecture notes and... a little facebook here and there... some Cafe World games... e-mail checking ... and before I knew it, my friend and I decided we had to go out. Where did we head? Downtown again. A hop on the subway, a cab here, a cab there... and baddaboom! We were at the bar with drinks in our hands ready for the rest of the night.

SUNDAY
This morning I woke up around 11 and slumped downstairs to find my mom making french toast. YUM. I've helped her with the dishes and concluded that I was going to go upstairs and really HIT. THE. BOOKS.

... Open computer, check out facebook, check e-mail... check blog... and well, here I am.

Too Scary

So... we have succumbed to the idea that step parents are always evil. Cinderella, Snow White and Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Home for Christmas are just a few of those Hollywood figures who have engraved the idea of horrid stepparents. A few months ago I saw a trailer for the movie The Stepfather and the thought of that movie has given me chills ever since. This movie is taking the “evil stepparent ideal” to an entire new level. Perhaps this seems like a bad idea for me in particular because for one thing, I hate scary movies. I always have and probably always will. I’ve never quite understood the pleasure in watching these horror films that not only make you feel terrified for the 90 minutes of screen time but for days – even years – after watching it. To this day, I continue to check behind the shower curtain before using the washroom in every house I enter because of What Lies Beneath (watched at age eleven.)

While I feel an utter discomfort and discontent when watching scary movies and on normal circumstances would never give a horror film my time of day... I feel it necessary to blog about this film in particular. “The Stepfather.” My goodness... if stepparents didn’t have a hard enough time as it is... Hollywood’s decided to throw a movie like this at them! Petrifying children of divorced or widowed parents everywhere! Now, I haven’t seen this movie and certainly don’t intend to, but I’d love to hear other’s opinions about the movie – so feel free to let me know if perhaps this movie does in fact, have a lovely happy-ever-after ending... though I highly doubt it.

Winnie is Back!

The cuddly bear born in 1924 cuddled his way into the hearts of our grandparents, parents and those of my generation. The little chubby, stuffed bear with an endless longing for honey reminds me of simple days as a child, watching his adorable adventures with friends Christopher Robin, Piglet, Tigger, Owl, Eeyore, and one mustn’t forget Rabbit. The two original volumes of Pooh’s adventures are Winnie-the-Pooh published in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner in 1928.

Call me crazy, but I find something freakishly weird about Dora, Spongebob, the Wiggles. These characters don’t have the charisma nor the soft spot in the hearts of young children today. The Winnie the Pooh series showed a gentle “moral of the story” through clever antidotes and funny character plots. Television shows today seem so in-your-face and “happy, happy, happy” and “sharing, sharing, sharing”... in an eerie sort of way. I personally think back to the days of Winnie the Pooh with great, innocent memories. Pooh getting stuck in Rabbit’s tree hole, Tigger getting lost in the Hundred Acre Woods, the bees constantly chasing Pooh Bear around, and Rabbit’s beautiful – but often trampled on – garden.

While recently others have had mixed opinions about the new Winnie the Pooh book, I am personally very excited for it and truly hope that it will encourage the return of that ever so lovely group of friends so many of us have grown to love.
